This parcel in Atherton, California has held a place in residents memories as one of the last undeveloped parcels in the town and one that has been home to beautiful, majestic native California trees, including redwoods, oaks and palms. A new residence is being built on the parcel and SHED has developed the landscape design. The design will maintain the majestic character of the existing, mature trees and add minimalist gardens near the new residence.
The site is organized by a series of five-foot tall hedges which simultaneously provide privacy to the interior spaces as well as navigation through the gardens. A highlight of the design is a minimalist courtyard which will feature a simple palette of gravel and bluestone stepstones with a grouping of five columnar Himalayan Birches.
